Year 2 Science
Planting Seeds
We have been planting sunflower seeds in Year 2. We are carrying out an experiment to discover what plants actually need to grow and flourish.
The children decided on the conditions of the experiment and then made their predictions about what would happen.
Each group now has seeds growing in the dark, with water and without, and in the sunshine, with water and without. We are keeping a check on our seeds and recording their growth.

Arboretum Trip
On Friday April 21st, Years 1 and 2 walked to the Arboretum.
Whilst we were there we used our ‘Spot It’ guides from the RSPB to look for minibeasts, birds, trees and shrubs, flowers and other signs of life like spider’s webs and squirrel’s drays. This trip was useful to enrich the Science topics for each year group. |

Visit from the RSPB
On Thursday April 21st Year 2 had a visit from a representative from the RSPB. She gave a presentation to the children about how to look for habitats in our local environment and then the children were put into small groups. They were given equipment like magnifying glasses, binoculars and collection pots. They were also given ‘Spot It’ guides with pictures of items to look for and tick off. We then went out to explore and observe on our school field, the playgrounds and the Sensory Garden. The children were encouraged to collect minibeasts in their collection pots to look more closely at them and then return them carefully to their natural habitat. |

Mad Science
On Monday March 14th, to begin Science Week, the Whole School watched an assembly lead by Fizzik from the Mad Science team.
He then visited Year 2 to lead a workshop about Dry Ice (Solid Carbon Dioxide). The children took part in all different experiments and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. They learnt a great deal about solids, liquids and gases and this enriched our Science Topic about Materials. |

Animals Including Humans
|
This term’s Science topic is ‘Animals including Humans’ and it has been taught to the children every Tuesday afternoon by Mrs Hayes.
They have learnt about how we group living things, how we take care of them, life cycles and food chains. As far as humans are concerned, they have learnt about growth and development, what humans need to survive, how to keep healthy and clean and eat well. |
The Chickens
The children had the most amazing two weeks when the chicken eggs were delivered to school on Monday November 2nd.
We were able to watch them hatch out of their eggs in the incubator and then we transferred them to the Brooding Box as they grew. The children learned how to hold them correctly and clean and feed them daily. They wrote diaries to document the daily changes. The chicks were collected after 2 weeks and taken to an organic farm locally to live out their days. |

Teddy Bear’s Hospital
|
On Wednesday November 4th Year 2 had a visit from the doctors of the Teddy Bear’s Hospital.
The children had all brought in their poorly teddies to be looked at and each one was examined and x-rayed. The children were taught how to wash their hands effectively and this was checked using a special machine that checked for remaining germs on their skin. They also carried out activities based on eating healthily and cleaning their teeth correctly. All of these activities supported their work in Science this term. |
