Year 2 History
The Great Fire of London
Burning Pudding Lane
On Monday March 7th 2016, Years 1 and 2 took their card houses outside to burn to re-enact the start of the Great Fire of London. The children had made their houses in pairs during a previous lesson. All of these houses were then stuck down onto cardboard so that they could not blow away in the wind. Fire safety precautions were taken to ensure the children were in no danger as they watched. The houses were then set alight by an adult and the wind did a great job of whipping the fire up and spreading it as it had done in 1666.

A Visit From Some Firefighters From Central Fire Station
On March 17th Years 1 and 2 were visited by the Firefighters from Central Fire Station for the morning. Firstly they explained about all the equipment on the rig and the children took turns to fire the water hose at a cone to knock it over. They were also able to climb up and sit inside the engine and put on the Firefighter’s helmets. For the rest of the morning they had training about Fire Safety in their homes and at school. This enriched our work in Science on Materials and our History work about the Fire of London. The children were learning about how things have changed and become safer for us in 2016. They each wrote a Thank You letter to the Firefighters for coming to see us.
