F2 Understanding Our World
WISE Project
|
Nottingham City Council is committed to educating the next generation about sustainable waste management issues and has developed the Waste In School Education (WISE) which is a FREE and fully supported waste education programme for schools. The WISE Education Officer came in to our school and gave an inspiring assembly on waste. F2 also had the opportunity to see a recycling bin lorry and were able to take appropriate waste to the lorry to be recycled. This project has definitely impacted the children in F2 as after the project the children were a lot more knowledgeable about what materials can be recycled, where non-recyclable materials end up, how long some non-recyclable waste takes to decompose if at all and how waste can affect our world.

Optician’s Role Play Area
A common interest that started to evolve amongst the children in our class was ‘wearing glasses’ which stemmed from a few of the children recently visiting the opticians. We decided to follow this line of enquiry and set up an Optician’s role play area in the classroom.
We had a lovely visit from an Optician who is also a parent in our class. This line of enquiry has resulted in the children knowing how to keep their eyes healthy - wearing sunglasses on sunny days, eating leafy green vegetables such as spinach and curly kale and drinking plenty of water.
The optician very kindly supplied us with lots of resources for our role play area and even gave each child a book which can be used as an indicator for parents as to whether their child might need a visit to the opticians.

Outdoor Environment
F2 have a newly resurfaced courtyard which they were very eager to get out and work in. The new flooring has really improved the look of this area and has made it much more appealing to the children. We opted for material that would keep the area looking as natural as possible e.g. rubber bonded mulch in brown and green.
St Mary's Café
We have thoroughly enjoyed our café role play area in F2, we were involved in the planning and setting up of this area. The owner of the café even wrote to us to see if we could design some healthy sandwiches to be put on the menu. We really had to work hard using different equipment such as knives, cheese graters and egg slicers to make the sandwiches we designed. We also then made a healthy ice-cream our focus this time being on the equipment and technology needed in order to make the ice-cream.
Apple Crumble
In F2 we enjoy finding out about the world around us. This includes exploring our environment, using technology and finding out about different cultures and traditions. During harvest we made an apple crumble. We thought about how the ingredients changed during the process of cooking. Most of us thought it was yummy! |

Autumn Walk
Fire Safety
|
We had a very special visit from the Fire Brigade this term.
The firemen talked to us about fire safety and we listened very carefully but then came the most exciting bit…we got to explore the fire engine and shoot the hose! |
