F1 Understanding Our World
Lifecycle of a caterpillar
In the summer term, F1 heard Eric Carl's story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. They looked after their very own caterpillars to observe ‘first hand’ the changes that happen to a caterpillar and the process it takes on to turn into a butterfly. We then released the butterflies in the garden. We then worked together to create a group collage of a butterfly and explored butterfly printing.
The Gingerbread Man
In the Spring term we carried out an experiment to try and find out why the Gingerbread from the traditional tale didn’t want to go in the river. We placed gingerbread in a vase of water and observed the effects the water had on the Gingerbread biscuit.
Here is what the children had to say...
The gingerbread didn’t swim.
Shyloh
The water went inside him. He is falling to the bottom. Look at the bubbles coming out.
Joshua
He is broken to bits, he’s on the bottom.

Growth and Change
During the Spring term we have found out about the growth of plant’s and the growth and change of humans. We planted beans and cress and observed them growing.
We experimented with and found out about the essential things that they need to help them grow. After reading the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ we wondered if all types of beans would grow so we carried out an experiment to find out. We planted baked beans, broad beans and Jelly beans and observed them for a few weeks on our class talk table to see which type of bean grew. We also learned about tally charts and had a go at using the tally method by asking our friends which bean they thought may grow.
We also brought in photos of us as a baby and used them during ‘talk time’ to tell each other about our photos and baby experiences. We thought about the things we could do now that we couldn’t when we were a baby and also compared the essential things that we need to survive with those of plants. We then used our photos as part of a craft activity, and turned them into a flower collage.

Our Class Pets
During our Spring topic on ‘growth and change’ we hired two guinea pigs from White Post Farm for two weeks. These became our class pets for a fortnight. We learned how to care for the guinea pigs and give them all the things they needed to survive and be happy. When the pets first arrived we were taught how to change their bed, feed and water them and how to hold them safely. We decided to call the guinea pigs ‘Rosie and Sebastian’. |

Fire Safety During Firework Night
To raise awareness of fire safety during firework night, F1 had a visit from the Fire service. The firefighters spoke to the children about ways they can stay safe around fireworks and bonfires. We also learnt how to keep animals safe around fireworks. We smelled a smoke box that smeled like a house would if it had a house fire. Then we explored the fire engine and had the opportunity to squirt the hose pipe. |
Black History
For Black History week, F1 looked at some things that maybe found in Africa.
We listened to some West African Folk tales about Anansi the Spider, then made our very own ‘Anansi’ spiders so we could retell the stories in our play! |
We dressed up in some traditional clothes and made or own Masai collars using different coloured shapes.
|
We learned an African song called ‘Che Che Kule’ and made up a tribal dance to go with it. We also took turns to play the Djembe – An African drum. |
Autumn Finds
E Safety
To help us learn how to keep safe when we use the computer we read an online story about ‘Smartie the Penguin’, we then learned a song to help us remember how to stay safe when using the Internet. The song goes like this…
“You need to think, think, think, Before you click, click, click, And TELL someone.” |
If you would like to learn about how to keep safe on the internet, you can find the story of ‘Smartie the Penguin’ by clicking on the following link…
