F1 Friendship Retreat Day
In June F1 held a retreat day reflecting on ‘friendships’. Francis the school chaplain taught the children about friendships and how we can be friends with each other and with Jesus. The children learnt a song called ‘God loves me’ and watched a video about ‘friendships’. The children then drew around their hands, decorated it and cut it out to create a collaborative heart that represented friendship. F1 then reflected on ways we could be a good friend to each other.
Advent Reflection Day
F1 had a lovely and reflective day exploring the meaning of Advent and Christmas. We started the day hearing the story of the First Christmas. The children then used the Nativity characters and scene to retell that story in their play. We learnt the meaning and symbolism of an Advent wreath and then worked together drawing and cutting out Holly leaves to create our own class wreath.
During the session we put up our class Christmas tree then added the Christmas promise gifts we made, thinking of things we could give to others during the Christmas period. We also used different media to collage Christmas stars. At the end of the session we came together to share our Advent thoughts and reflections gathered from the day’s activities. |

Diwali – The Festival of Lights
F1 found out about the Hindu festival of Diwali and the way people may celebrate this festival. We heard the story of Rama and Sita, found out that lamps are lit to help Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, find their way into people’s homes. We also explored the types of clothing people may wear during their celebrations. We made our own diva lamps out of salt dough, then decorated them in bright colours. We also focussed on painting curved shapes to make painted divas. Some children celebrated the festival by bringing in chocolates for everyone to share. |
